    A few weeks ago, the Supreme Court announced it would hear a challenge to the 2010 law overhauling the nation’s health care system. Health care reform has been called “President Obama’s signature legislative achievement.” But in the video below, my Kotter International colleagues Shaun Spearmon and Dennis Goin wonder whether the president set out to transform the health care system too soon, without generating enough public urgency and excitement about the opportunities that reform could usher in.

  • Words Matter: Getting Rid of Business Jargon

    Earlier this week, I posted video of a conversation I had with a Kotter International colleague. In the clip, we explained the trouble with business jargon and ran through a few slang terms—“roll out,” “cascade,” “consult” and “train”—that really rub me the wrong way.  They didn’t use to. I suspect I used them like everyone else. I try, very hard, not to let that happen today.

    Business jargon drives me crazy! Particularly when driving complex transformations with a lot of moving parts, clear communication is essential. Without it, leaders will confuse their audience, lose momentum and enthusiasm, and potentially derail their change effort.
